Pre-1918 BSA & Lincoln Jeffries air rifles There follows an abridged list of serial numbers of pre-WW1 BSA and Lincoln Jeffries rifles, based on the comprehensive list in John Knibb's book BSA and Lincoln Jeffries Air Rifles: A Concise Illustrated History of Their Development and Manufacture, 1904-18. Mr Knibbs drew up his list from entries in the original factory ledgers. This list will be of assistance in narrowing down the age of your rifle. For a much more detailed record of your rifle's manufacture and despatch from the factory, please refer to the above book. Vintage BSAs 1919-1939 John Knibbs, who owns the BSA factory ledgers, didn't include a list of serial numbers for the post-1919 BSA air rifles in his book The Golden Century (copyright John Knibbs 2002). The reason was that the serial numbers were not issued in chronological order, so the following information SHOULD BE TREATED WITH CAUTION!!! Two sources of date identification have been published, apparently before the uncertainty mentioned above was understood, by Dennis Hiller in his book Air Rifles and by P J Colman in his articles in Guns Review.

The Hiller ones take the format 'Model, Maker, Date'): Light patterns 'L' and 'A' Club ('CS' and 'C') and Standard.22 cal ('S' and 'T' patterns) Breakdown pattern.

Davy, thanks for the welcome. Its spring airgun that I believe to be a.177, its not seized at all but the stock is a bit wobbly. Daughter has confiscated my phone for her own use but I found a pretty close image of it This one has the serial No 4473 so guesstimating around the year 1919. There is a bit of corrosion around the end of the barrel by the sight. It would be great if you could take a look at it, I could come to your meet up one weekend when I'm not out racing with the terriers.

Where would my local gunsmith be, I'm in Chippenham Many thanks, Nicola. Davy, thanks for the welcome. I am pretty sure its a model D BSA which was the follow on from the Lincoln Jeffries patented rifle, Those guns were about from Pre War One!! In fact most if not all bell target teams shot those rifles in the 1920,s onward. It is of course a underlever and the loading was done via the rotating tap, Ala the later Airsporters. To check the airtightness of the loading tap Cock the rifle open the tap then STILL HOLDING the underlever pull the trigger and return the underlever to the barrel, if the tap is sound it will take a few seconds bafore the underlever locks up. If the tap is worn and leaks all is not lost, its a easy job to remove the tap and have it zinc or copper plated to restore it to leak free opperation. Can tago mago blogspot software.
